When we think of diving, we all have a certain image: a diver with a scuba tank on his back breathing air through a hose. But how does diving really work? How can we breathe underwater? To answer this question, we must start at the beginning and ask ourselves what the term SCUBA diving means. Know?

What Is Scuba Diving?

To understand what scuba diving is, we need to know what SCUBA means. SCUBA is the abbreviation for Underwater Self Contained Breathing Apparatus. When we dive, we need to allow ourselves to breathe underwater. For this, we need the diving equipment.

Diving equipment
Scuba equipment, or scuba equipment, exists of different parts that work together to allow you to dive. Here we list the most important parts and what their function is:

Diving cylinder / diving tank: contains the compressed gas that we breathe. The standard gas is the same mixture of the air we breathe on the surface: 21% oxygen and 79% nitrogen. However, it can also contain different gas mixtures. Nitrox, or enriched air for example. This mixture contains a higher percentage of oxygen and therefore a lower percentage of nitrogen. This extends your allowed background times. More on this topic in another article. The gas inside the tank is compressed to a pressure of around 200 bar. The tanks are made of aluminum or steel. Robo tanks are heavier underwater. Therefore, you use less ballast during your dive. However, steel tanks are more sensitive to corrosion. This is the reason why many divers prefer aluminum tanks. There are also different sizes available: 8 litres, 10 litres, 12 liters or 15 litres. The 10 liter tanks are used mainly by children. The 15 liter tanks for people who use a lot of air. 12 liter tanks are the most common and are the standard size for most dive centers, also our hurghada dive center.
Regulator: The regulator consists of two parts: the first stage and the second stage. The first stage reduces the pressure in the tank (200 bar) to what we call medium pressure (a pressure slightly higher than the pressure around it). The second stage has a nozzle attached to the end. When we breathe through this mouthpiece, the second stage lowers the pressure of the first stage to the pressure equal to the pressure around us. This allows you to breathe.

Submersible Pressure Gauge (SPG): The SPG shows how much pressure is left inside your tank. This way you can see how much air you have used during the dive and when it is time to back out and end the dive before you run out of air.
Low Pressure Inflation (LPI) Hose – The LPI connects air from your tank to your BCD. This way you can inflate and deflate your BCD to control your buoyancy.
Buoyancy Control Device (BCD): Your BCD is like a jacket and has multiple uses: it's one of 3 ways to control your buoyancy, it carries the tank on your back, and it can hold any accessory you want to take with you during your dive . There are countless types of BCDs that come in different designs, shapes, and sizes. It depends on the type of dives you plan to do, your body type and of course comfort which one is best for you. That is why we advise you to always go to a professional workshop to help you choose the one that best suits you.
Diving mask – A diving mask makes sure that no water or dirt gets into your eyes during the dive and allows you to see clearly underwater. There are even prescription masks available now so that people who wear glasses above water can also see clearly underwater. Wearing contact lenses is not a problem. You can keep them in while you dive and wear a standard scuba mask. What is very important is that the mask fits well. Not a single person has exactly the same face shape. This is why there are countless models of diving masks. We recommend that you visit a professional and try different brands to find your perfect fit.

Fins: When you dive, you don't use your arms to swim. You only use your legs. Using good fins helps you swim more easily. There is a difference in fins for snorkeling and scuba diving. Diving fins are usually much stronger and also larger and heavier than snorkel fins. With diving, you need to have more power from your fins to easily move through a current, for example. There are a large number of different models and designs and they all serve a different purpose. There are heavy or lighter fins. Open back fins worn with boots, or with a closed, integrated boot.
